ROLLER FRAME TO BOOT MOUNT

Skates U.S. is the best source for mounting high end Skating Boots and Roller Frames.   At Skates U.S., we take our time with mounting and strive for accuracy.

Our techniques reflect the best alignment and mounting methods used by the best people mounting roller skates around the world. Our methods and procedures are proper for today’s equipment.

Skates U.S. mounts Edea boots with the supplied screws.  Non-Edea boots may be mounted using bolts, washers, and locknuts at additional cost.   We then finish with a complete check of all skate adjustments, especially the Pivot Pins. Sometimes when remounting a pair of boots, the holes must be plugged and filled to get an accurate mount.  In some cases, the Edea Power Wedges may be used to fill the gap under the toes, between the skating boot and the flat frame.

Skates U.S. is a great choice to mount your frames, as we have the selection of frame sizes available to visually place on the skating boot to ensure proper sizing for the type of skating you are going to do. A particular size skating boot may have various sizes of frames mounted, based on the type of skating being done.

FRAME SIZING

1. IN FRONT OF THE BALL OF THE FOOT (LONGER)

The boot to frame sizing chart is based on what most freestyle skaters would use. This is a longer skate frame, or longer wheel base with the front axle just slightly in front of the ball of the foot, so the skaters would have a larger landing platform and not go on the toe stop as easy when landing jumps or doing spins. This sizing is also used for most quad speed skaters, jam skaters, some roller derby, and most recreational skaters. This does diminish the absolute control and maneuverability of the skate, but does enhance the stability of the skating action. Most lower end skate packages, simply put the longest frame possible on the skating boot, which does not provide the best of action control.

2. RIGHT AT (ON) THE BALL OF THE FOOT (STANDARD)

For dance skating (which includes solo dance, original dance, and free dance) and figure skating the desire would be to have the front axle directly under the ball of the foot. This provides for the most response for quick turns and strong edges balanced with maximum stability. This may also prove to be the best way for roller derby skaters to size their frames, as maneuverability and quick changes in direction are very important in this sport. This may mean that on some boots the frame size would, in most cases, be smaller than shown on the chart.

3. JUST A LITTLE BEHIND THE BALL OF THE FOOT (SHORTER)

For figure loop skating most of the top level coaches encourage their students to have a slightly shorter wheel base, if using two pairs of skates for figures. This would usually mean one half  to one whole size shorter than that used for the large circles. The shorter wheel base is said to allow better control in the loop portion of the circle.
For quad roller ball hockey the normal is to use a frame that is about two sizes shorter than the chart will show. This is so they can get to their toe stops faster for quick starts and stops. Quad roller ball hockey is a very fast sport!

Skates U.S. mountings are backed by a thorough knowledge and understanding of skating. A professional mount is important to allow a skater to perform at their best.

DISMOUNT AND/OR MOUNT BEARINGS IN WHEELS

Dismount and/or mount bearings in wheels (used for roller frames)

Skates U.S. will pull the bearings from a set of wheels (8) and install or reinstall a set of bearings (either new, cleaned, or replaced). Care will be taken to seat the bearings correctly into the wheels, so the bearings are parallel to each other. In some instances, the wheel hub is not machined correctly to allow proper roll, correcting this is not covered in this type of installation.

Skates U.S. recommends the use of spacers between the bearings whenever possible. The use of spacers and being able to lock down the axle nuts completely, effectively increases the axle size from 7mm to 13mm. This is very important to Freestyle skaters, when falling and letting the heel and rear wheels slam into the floor, sometimes bending the rear axles. With the use of spacers, there is less of a chance of bending an axle.

RERUN SKATE THREAD

ROLLER SERVICES Skates U.S.

Clean up or rerun threads on the skates

Skates U.S. will use the appropriate taps and dies to clean up and smooth out the threads on you skates.

The following are the most common used:
1. Toe stops (tap) to clean the frame for the threads of the toe stops.
2. Toe stop allen screw (tap) to clean the frame for the threads of the toe stop allen screw.
3. King pins (tap) to clean the frame for the threads of the king pins.
4. Axles (die) to clean the axle threads for the axle nuts
5. Pivot pins (tap) to clean the threads in the truck for the pivot pins.

This process will only work if the threads are not damaged beyond repair. If there is no material for the tap or die to clean, then Skates U.S. may recommend the replacement of the stripped parts.
